A Year of Service: Reflections from the Legislative Council

The unexpected answer to a challenging year

As we mark the end of a demanding parliamentary year, it is easy to get caught up in the heat of debate and the stress of legislation that shapes our state. Yet, beneath the robust discussions and occasional sharp interjections lies a bedrock of respect, goodwill and shared commitment. This year has shown me that despite our differences, the Legislative Council is a place where people come together to serve Western Australians with heart and honesty.

It's not just about passing bills; it’s about the unseen work — the long hours, the late-night sittings, the negotiations and, importantly, the relationships forged along the way. As a medical doctor, I’m reminded of the importance of teamwork and empathy. Here, these values are just as essential as in a clinic room: without collaboration, the patient — in this case our community — suffers.

Voices, warmed by respect and shared purpose

This chamber is richer because of its many diverse voices, and I feel privileged to work alongside extraordinary people from all sides—government, opposition and the crossbench. We bring different views but share a dedication to getting the job done well. I have been heartened to see the crossbench bring balance and encourage dialogue rather than division. This is no small feat in an institution where the stakes are high and the issues complex.

The leadership we see here sets the tone for the entire chamber—the President, with her calm and fair guidance, reminds us daily why this place matters. Many times, I have seen my colleagues respond with grace and good humour, even when the going got tough. As we have all juggled new roles and steep learning curves, mutual support has made the impossible possible.

The unsung heroes who keep it all moving

Behind every effective Parliament is an army of dedicated staff who often go unnoticed. From clerks advising with wisdom and patience, to chamber attendants who smooth the daily flow, to the catering, security and building services teams — all contribute indispensable efforts. It’s these unseen contributions that safeguard the smooth running of democracy and allow members to focus on the complex work of governance.

As a doctor with an acute awareness of risk and consequence, it strikes me how crucial this underlying system is. It’s much like a clinic’s foundation: if neglected, chaos ensues. Our parliamentary staff ensure this house functions like a well-oiled machine under constant pressure.

Gratitude, goodwill and the road ahead

Looking back, it’s clear this year has not been easy. Many of us have juggled public duty with personal sacrifice, missing family moments and enduring late nights. I know how tiring it can feel — that gnawing worry about what is waiting at home, or whether you’ve done enough. It’s a sobering reminder that public service is deeply human.

But there is hope too. In every conversation, handshake, and even the shared laughter after a tough day, I see a spirit of service that transcends politics. Our focus remains on the people of Western Australia, who rely on us not just to oppose or agree, but to listen, enhance legislation, and seek common ground.

Before we all head off to recharge with those we love, I want to extend my deepest thanks to every member, staffer and supporter who has contributed to this year. Your efforts keep the wheels turning on our democracy. If you want to revisit this moment and hear more about our final day’s reflections, you can read the full official record online.
